Places is an album of different places that I have visited. Featured here is Tikal. Tikal is an ancient Mayan city that lays in ruin. Places contains exotic photographs, but also a lot of places local to me in Virginia, Washington D.C., Maryland, and the like.

Like all albums, the list will be constantly growing. Take a look at my Places album in My Photos and don’t forget to check out my other albums.

This is the walkway heading toward the Lincoln Memorial. The scattered lamps, benches, people and faded sun spoke a goodbye to the day.Alaska 10Another stop along our Napa Wine tour. I really liked the simplicity of this composition. On the beach there is a sense of endlessness that the vast open areas create.austin-alien-skin

The cherry blossoms ring in the arrival of spring every year in Washington D.C. These two young musicians came to play Vivaldi's The Four Seasons, Spring, along the Tidal Basin. All of the geometric really captured my attention. The first view of Half Dome on the loop around Yosemite Valley. The historic section of Harpers Ferry West Virginia is a beautiful and fun place to visit. Of course, as with Virginia, the best time to visit is the Fall. The colors of the trees, the historic buildings, and all of the shops and restaurants are open. The temperature is great. I liked the tree in the foreground. The Three trunks broke up the view into some interesting sections. The trunks seems to be a distraction, but they speak something to me.The Kuna people are an indigenous population in Panama. The Kuna are famous for their Molas, or the tapestries that they make and wear as clothing. The lamplights were coming on in the late spring afternoon as I walked around the Tidal Basin. The sun was low on the horizon and casting long shadows. The light still illuminated the white flowers of the cherry blossom trees. The effect of white flowers illuminated by the late afternoon sun made a surreal effect as though there were night, and day, and no twilight in between. The orange dome of the Mission Inn as seen from across the courtyard. The photograph gives a great example of the variety of structures and details that create the unique building that is the Mission Inn.
  • There are many fascinating details with all of the architecture at the Mission Inn. One of the most notable are the many balconies and archways the form the paths in and around the building. These are the rocks at the Baths in the Virgin Islands. The Baths form a large area where these massive boulders seemingly came out of nowhere. Nobody knows how or why these misplaced boulders made it to the islands although many speculate they are left over from a long lost volcano. The shoreline along Tangier is mostly marsh because the land is slowly sinking into the ChesapeakeThe side of the Xunantunich temple. The sun was very low in the sky and disappearing behind the Lincoln Memorial. From this vantage point you can see Bridal Veil Falls, El Capitan, and off in the distance Half Dome. The Tunnel Yosemite - Version Master AspectThis is a long pier that extends out from a great restaurant on Caye Caulker. I liked this image because of the contrast between beauty and age. There is a certain beauty to things as they crumble apart. This pier is still used, and quite sturdy, but definitely worn. This is one of the many temples in Tikal. The stones represent locations for beheading. Although it may not be true, I have my own ideas about sacrifices. Archeologists base what they believe to be true based on their understanding, which as with everyone, is limited to the understanding of the world they live in, and through the eyes of their own culture. I think of the Mayan people as I would any other people. I do not believe they were crazy blood thirsty savages that beheaded people for fun. I believe the Maya did not have the concept of jail. Locking someone in a room for crimes for years on end probably seemed odd and cruel. My guess is these stones were used for, as with all other peoples, as punishment for terrible crimes that could not be paid by sweat or trade. This is the building seen as the school house in Alfred Hitchcock's movie, The Birds. This is the Natural Bridge in Virginia as seen walking into the park.Thomas Jefferson Memorial ColumnsThomas Jefferson Memorial Virginia StatuteThree Branches - Landscape Black and WhiteThree Branches 2Three Colonial HostessesThree Colonial Hostesses - Black and WhiteThree Colonial Hostesses 2Three Colonial Hostesses 2 - Black and WhiteTikal Temple I
